Ben&Jerry's - Good or Bad?

Now this is an interesting brand. They are the naughty activist child that the parent is trying to tame and stop 'the nonsense'. By the parent I mean Unilever, the grumpy parent that seems to be more worried about making Ben&Jerry's (B&J) more like their other brands than supporting them in their incredible mission.

B&J values are simple:

  • Human Rights & Dignity

  • Social and Economic Justice

  • Environmental Protection, Restoration and Regeneration

This seems pretty nice right? I think so too and I truly believe they are a great brand.

They not only make sure their products do not harm the planet, but they also play an active role in activism.

They make sure their products are good, that the people producing them are benefiting from the business and that their supply chain is more diverse by making sure that their producers are culturally/ethnically diverse. Oh, and of course their cows are happy cows - at least that is what it seems.

One worrying point about B&J is that their parent company Unilever has just fired its CEO. This is concerning as this is just one way of silencing a company, even though B&J is their best company in the ice cream industry and their products are of great quality (and flavour too, I think). It is sad to think that Unilever is so afraid of B&J political stand that they would file a court order to get rid of the CEO.

So, is B&J good or bad? It is good but owned by a bad company. I would love for B&J to ride sole again and to be able to do things their way, but until then we can still enjoy their delicious and ethical ice cream.
